Press Release - Athabasce River Flood Watch update for Whitecourt

A Flood Watch remains in effect for the Athabasca River at Whitecourt, and river levels are expected to peak in the afternoon of July 3, 2020.

As a safety precaution, a Mandatory Evacuation Order was issued for Sagitawah RV Park at 12:06 a.m. on July 3, 2020.  With the assistance of the Whitecourt RCMP and Town of Whitecourt officials, all residents and park users have been  evacuated, and the order remains in effect at this time.

The Town of Whitecourt will continue to monitor water levels and river forecasts provided by the Government of Alberta.  The evacuation order for Sagitawah RV Park will be re-evaluated later today, and the Town of Whitecourt will advise the public accordingly.  Updates will be provided at and on Whitecourt’s Facebook page at    

People are reminded to exercise extreme caution around the rivers.  The following facilities and amenities are closed until further notice:

  • Rotary Park trail system;
  • Riverside Trail;
  • Riverboat Park.

Barricades are being erected, and members of the public are asked to obey all posted signage.
