On Aug 4th 2015 Josie MacKinnon was wheeled into the Stollery Children’s Hospital operating room for what would be the first of five neurosurgeries over the course of 6 weeks to treat a rare brain condition, Arachnoid Cyst with Subdural Hygromas, it was if she had a water balloon in her brain and it broke open spilling out fluid that was causing a life threatening condition and would require a shunt to manage. After each surgery Josie was able to choose a new toy from her nurse’s office, this helped to shift her anxiety over having brain surgery and replaced it with the excitement of getting something new! In the months following Josie’s release from hospital she wanted to do something to help other kids like her who would be just as scared as she was as they faced their first surgeries. Josie held her first Toy Drive in November of 2015 and we have been hosting it annually ever since. We collect *NEW* toys for children aged Infant to 17 years of age who are admitted to the Stollery Children’s Hospital for Brain and Spinal Surgery. Items that are always a great hit and in demand are colouring books, crayons/markers, Playdoh, games and most smaller items that can be easily played with while lying in bed.

Last Year we added Josie’s Lemonade Stand in an effort to support Jacob’s Wish. Jacob's Wish, is an organization that specializes in random acts of kindness to families of sick children. Jacob's life was about loving and gifting people around him. He went through 97 surgeries in his short life. His mother, Soula, is carry on Jacob's Wish of helping bring happiness to people, particularly, families of sick children at the Stollery Children’s Hospital.

Your continued support is greatly appreciated. To learn more about The Neurosurgery Kids Fund please visit: www.neurosurgerykids.com & Jacob’s Wish visit: www.jacobswish.com
