Press Release - Whitecourt Town Council Update September 11, 2019
Whitecourt Town Council will be supporting the Town of Peace River’s request to have the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) reconsider its ruling regarding a recent GST audit on intermunicipal cost sharing agreements. The CRA recently assessed intermunicipal cost sharing agreement items as being subject to Federal Gas Tax (GST) for the Town of Peace River, which could set a precedent for municipalities across the country. If this were to come into effect in Whitecourt it could cause numerous administrative challenges; and, given the inconsistency with which the regulation has been applied in Peace River, it could prove extremely challenging to determine which services should be considered eligible for federal taxation. In addition, existing service agreements with partners do not include a tax provision, which could create substantial costs to the municipality.
Whitecourt Town Council is providing a letter of support for an application to establish a Canadian Rangers troop locally. Canadian Rangers are members of Canada’s Reserve Force, and play an important role in assisting the Canadian Armed Forces by providing local expertise, guidance and advice, and providing local assistance to search and rescue activities in support of local authorities.
Whitecourt Town Council scheduled a Special Meeting at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 10 to discuss Intermunicipal Collaboration.
