Press Release - Celebrate Canada Day in Whitecourt July 1
Canada Day will be a bit different this year due to COVID-19 and physical distancing regulations – but that isn’t stopping us from celebrating.
While the outdoor events at Rotary Park and parade through downtown have been cancelled, we’ve moved celebrations online. For details on all the fun and activities visit www.whitecourt.ca or follow the Canada Day Celebration 2020 event page on Facebook.
“Whitecourt’s Canada Day event is typically one of our larger community events, and I’m happy that we found ways to continue this local celebration,” stated Emma Harper, Whitecourt Recreation Coordinator. “While gathering and physical distancing requirements have limited certain activities, I think we’ve come up with unique and fun ways to continue to engage the community in a safe way.”
Below are some highlights of this year’s local celebration.
- Canada Day kits can be picked up at the Allan & Jean Millar Centre. Kits include decorating items, and activities to help you celebrate.
- Community members can show their Canadian pride by decorating their homes and properties and entering Whitecourt’s Virtual Canada Day Parade. Nominations will be accepted until 4:00 p.m. on June 26, and the Whitecourt Legion will be judging on June 29.
- The annual fireworks display will proceed at 11:15 p.m. Fireworks will be set off at Eastlink Park. In order to comply with current public gathering restrictions, Eastlink Park will be closed to the public, but community members are encouraged to watch the display from their yards or cars at locations throughout town.
