Press Release - Whitecourt’s Economic Recovery Grant Program now accepting applications

Whitecourt has launched the Economic Recovery Grant Program that will help local businesses respond to the challenges of COVID-19 and provide flexible funding to strengthen business models.

“Some of the most severely impacted sectors of the economy will require enhanced service delivery and resources in order to support an inclusive economic recovery for all residents and businesses,” stated Whitecourt Mayor Maryann Chichak. “Supporting businesses is a priority of Whitecourt Town Council, and the actions we take, and protocols we put in place now will have a great impact on our community’s success and recovery in the future.”

The program was created with the support of Community Futures Yellowhead East’s Regional Business  Resiliency & Diversification Partnership Initiative Fund.  Community Futures Yellowhead East is a vital resource in Whitecourt and the region, and its strategic partnership in initiatives such as this grant program are what help build a resilient community.

“We are still in the midst of dealing with COVID-19 and our small business community has been hard-hit,” added Economic Development Officer Rhonda Hough.  “We need to be flexible and responsive to the evolving impacts businesses face. Continued engagement and collaboration to find opportunities to support businesses throughout the pandemic and recovery is more critical now than ever before.”

Grant funding is currently available to Whitecourt businesses under two support streams:

  • Stream One: Matching Microgrants of up to $2,000 per business;
  • Stream Two: Waived Non-Residential Permit Fees for “Permitted Uses”.

“We recognize that programs may need to be redesigned or developed to respond to the pandemic, and we may need to pivot services to best support the business community,” added Mayor Chichak.  “This program was developed through communication and relationships we have continued to build throughout the pandemic, and as we work with local businesses through this program, we will be able to build future initiatives to meet their changing needs as we move through the COVID-19 economic recovery.”

Information on the grant program is available at www.whitecourt.ca/Business/EconomicSupportandRecovery.
