Eagle Tower Victim Services Unit: Volunteer Advocate

Description of Position:

Advocates will provide assistance to victims of crime or trauma in the Whitecourt, Fox Creek and surrounding areas including suitable referrals to other agencies and programs.

Volunteer Role:

Advocates will assist with court preparation and accompaniment for victim witness, Victim Impact Statements, Requests For Restitution, and financial benefits. Advocates will be trained to provide support during and after a crisis including a 35 module training program provided by the Solicitor General. An RCMP security clearance is required.

NorQuest College: Community Adult Learning Program (CALP) Digital Skills Tutor, Youth Teaching Adults

Description of Position:

We are seeking youth aged 16 - 18 to tutor adults and seniors in basic digital skills.

The CALP at NorQuest will provide trianing and lesson plans so youth are prepared to offer one-on-one tutoring to adult learners in areas such as basic computer or device hardware, Internet safety, using apps, or creating and using email or Social Media.

Volunteer Role:

Participate in training and mentoring with CALP staff at NorQuest (up to approximately 3.5 hours of training)

Offer one-on-one tutoring sessions (with support as needed) once a week, from the end of April until the middle of June 2021.

Volunteer Benefits:

  • Gain experience, confidence and leadership skills;
  • Get training and support to learn and practice facilitation skills for face-to-face and/or online learning;

The Town of Whitecourt Transit program is now hiring a casual driver within the Community Services Department to operate the Transit fleet and the Dial-A-Bus. This position requires early morning, evening, and daytime hours for both weekday and weekend shift coverage.

As a Whitecourt Transit driver, you will operate a Whitecourt Transit vehicle with timed schedules, which include a varying number of stops along the way. Drivers are responsible for collecting fares, responding to customer inquiries regarding transit information, and ensuring the safety of all customers. All fleet buses are wheelchair accessible; knowledge on passenger loading, securing, and unloading will be an asset. Sanitizing, cleaning, and pressure washing fleet vehicles is required. Applicants must be physically able to complete assigned tasks.

This position requires attentiveness, good judgment, safe driving habits, exceptional customer service, and an ability to deal with a variety of passengers.

The successful applicant will have:

  • Class 2 driver's licence;
  • Air brake endorsement;
  • Clean driving record and experience driving bus;
  • Current Standard First Aid and CPR certification.

The successful candidate must enjoy working with the public, must have above average inter-personal communications skills, and be able to maintain records and statistics on ridership. Our organization currently has an opening for one temporary, full-time Family Support Diversion Workers within the Community Services Department to deliver services for our regional program. This is a term position, covering a maternity leave within our department.

As a part of the Family Support Program team, you will work closely with families, children, youth, agencies, and the community to provide in-home and community supports in the Whitecourt and regional areas outlined in our contract with Children’s Services.

Key duties include:
• Individual and family support both in-person and by virtual means when suitable.
• Developing strategies and recommendations to assist families with the supports and skills they require to function effectively in their home, family and community.
• Providing referrals to psychologists and family therapists if required.
• Overall case management; facilitating psychoeducational community groups and sessions on a variety of topics.
• Facilitating parent education groups, and program reporting including evaluation and outcome measures.
• Regional travel will be required for this position.

From the preferred applicant, we are seeking:
• A degree, diploma, or certification in a Human Services discipline or equivalent experience and education;
• Experience in family counseling;
• Experience in group delivery and community programming;
• The ability to work with a variety of agencies and partnerships;
• Experience in community development and working in partnership with multiple organizations;
• Experience in offering parent education programs;
• Experience working with diverse populations; and,
• Motivational Interviewing and Suicide Awareness Training are considered assets.
