Eagle Tower Victim Services Unit: Volunteer Advocate

Description of Position:

Advocates will provide assistance to victims of crime or trauma in the Whitecourt, Fox Creek and surrounding areas including suitable referrals to other agencies and programs.

Volunteer Role:

Advocates will assist with court preparation and accompaniment for victim witness, Victim Impact Statements, Requests For Restitution, and financial benefits. Advocates will be trained to provide support during and after a crisis including a 35 module training program provided by the Solicitor General. An RCMP security clearance is required.

Duties

  • Be responsible for the outcomes and activities of the Whitecourt Fire Department, Law Enforcement (including the Bylaw/Peace Officer Program), Occupational Health and Safety Program, and Community Emergency Management Program.
  • Continue to develop, refine, and enhance the Town’s Occupational Health and Safety Program to meet the organizational safety requirements.
  • Be appointed as, and responsible for, the duties of the Director of Emergency Management under the Community Emergency Management Plan.
  • Act as the Town liaison with RCMP.
  • Participate as a member of the Town’s Senior Management Team; providing input and direction towards the achievement of the Town’s overall goals.

Qualifications

The strategic leadership of the Director is vital to the development and coordination of community safety for our community. The successful candidate will possess the following qualifications:

  • Post-secondary education (i.e. Business Administration, Political Science, certificate in Local Government Administration, or equivalent) supplemented with extensive private sector or public sector management and leadership experience.
  • A CLGM designation and/or enrollment or completion of the National Advanced Certificate in Local Authority Administration (NACLAA) program is desired.
  • Five years of administrative leadership experience at a senior level.
  • Disaster & Emergency Management and Occupational Health & Safety Certificates are an asset. These will be required once hired.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate ideas, project, and process concepts, both orally and in writing, with ease and clarity.

  • Excellent knowledge and technical applied knowledge of engineering design and construction standards (roadways, water, sewer, drainage).
  • Ability to interpret and apply legislation including recommendations for policy and procedure amendments.
  • Excellent customer service, organizational, time management, and prioritization skills, coupled with strong business letter and report writing techniques. Previous asset management experience would be considered a strength.
  • Strong attention to detail, ability to critically analyze information, and solve problems of a complex nature.
  • Ability to compile and analyze data on demographic, economic, legal, political, cultural, sociological, physical, and other factors affecting land use or sustainable development goals.

Compensation

The Town of Whitecourt offers a progressive working environment, a comprehensive benefit plan, and Local Authorities Pension Plan. The salary range for this position is currently $84,145 to $102,375 per year.

The successful applicant will be required to pass a pre-employment physical and criminal record check, and provide a clean driver’s abstract, prior to being hired.
